Striking Events

1967 : Motor sports enthusiasts, members of the Club Autosport Mauricien (CAM) has successfully completed the challenge to hold races on road circuits of 1,14 miles on the streets of Trois-Rivieres. This unique event was called the "Competitions Labatt Three Rivers".

1969 : The event changed its name to Molson Grand Prix, which becomes the main sponsor. The powerful Formula "A" Cup Gulf Canada, almost as fast as Formula 1, run for the first time in Trois-Rivieres.

1973 : The first participation of Gilles Villeneuve at Trois-Rivieres ended in a victory from start to finish in Formula Ford 1600. The international class driver, Jean-Pierre Jaussaud also takes part of the event in Formula "B". The circuit is now 1.5 miles long.

1974 : The spectacular and sophisticated Formula Atlantic, run by recognized pilots, becomes a must.

1976 : Gilles Villeneuve again amazes the visitors with his victory in Formula Atlantic. The popular Trans-Am series makes a remarkable race with the victory of George Follmer.

1977 : The beginnings of the Can-Am Series with powerful cars give to spectators big thrills.

1978 : The circuit is extended from 1.5 to 2.1 miles, including a section in the shape of "M" inside the racetrack that gives cars an opportunity to express their power.

1981 : Jacques Villeneuve Senior will follow the footsteps of Gilles Villeneuve and won his first victory in Formula Atlantic.

1982 : The event lost its point man with the departure of Yvon Simard, General Director from 1975 to 1982. Labatt Breweries also becomes the main sponsor of Grand Prix.

1983 : The future star Michael Andretti, win the World Formula combining the old Atlantic and Pacific series.

1984: This edition is marked by the return of the Formula Atlantic series after a year's absence despite the withdrawal of the famous Can-Am Series.

1986 à 1988 : Because a serious lack of money, the Grand Prix's direction decide to interrupt the presentation of the event during 3 years.

1989 : The event's direction create the "Association du sport motorisé de Trois-Rivières (A.S.M.T.R.)" that become the new organization of the Grand Prix. Five races were presented on a 1.5 miles track and Jacques Villeneuve Senior wins again.

1990 : The popular Trans-Am series is back at Trois-Rivières and offers a very interesting show. Player's company increase is contribution on the Grand Prix and becomes the official sponsors.

1991 : The return of the Formula 1600 and the participation of Greg Moore, a 16 years old and talented driver were very appreciated by the public. Moore becomes the youngest driver to race at Trois-Rivières. Player’s Limited still invests in the Grand Prix, a more and more important event.

1992 : American Continental series is now part of the program. Jacques Villeneuve Jr. race for is first time at Trois-Rivières.

1994 : With the agreement of Player’s, Léon Méthot now works as the President and the Director of the Grand Prix. Is professionalism is much appreciated and is a part of the event's success.

1998 : Molson breweries becomes the second major sponsor to present the event. Jacques Villeneuve Senior race for is last time in Formula Atlantic.

1999 : It's the last presence of Trans-Am at the Grand Prix. This series were part of the race program since 1976.

2000 : Because of the new government regulation, Player's sponsor is last event, replaced by Chrysler company. This third sponsor brings the Canadian Champcar Lights Championship.

2002 : A new major series comes at Trois-Rivières, the American Le Mans with four car categories and Trans-Am series is back with the World Challenge.

2003 : After the leaving of Léon Méthot, a group of volunteers with the support of Trois-Rivières city, create the Association du Sport Motorisé de la Mauricie (A.S.M.M).

2004 : This new nonprofit organization has for goal to revive and secure the perenity of the oldest event presented in a street circuit. This 35th edition is presented by Coors Light and Tourisme Québec.

2005 : With its new president, Joël St-Pierre, the executive committee work hard to give back the success and importance of the Grand Prix. On the track the event present Grand-Am, Honda Michelin Challenge, Formula 1600, Atlantic Formula and the new series Star Mazda.

2006 : This edition, Star Mazda series presents a regular round for the championship. Marc-Antoine Camirand participates at three different series and wins his 7th victory at the Grand Prix.

2007 : Toyota Pirelli cup presents a stunning event, with action during the entire race. Andrew Ranger wins is duel with Kerry Micks during the Nascar Canadian Tire series, ended by an impressing collision after the end line.

2008 : Formula Atlantic is back after four years of absence. The 9th victory of Marc-Antoine Camirand with his BMW M3 equalizes the record of Jacques Bienvenue.

2009 : We expend pits of 10 feet on a distance of 800 feet to allow two lanes traffic. We also add a second false line and a new footbridge over the start line. This 40th edition of the Grand Prix is a success and gives many ideas for the next years.

2010 : The 41th edition presents many news activities and show at the main site and at downtown. On track, Andrew Ranger wins his third victory in same start in Nascar Canadian Tire series while Marc-Antoine Camirand beets the record of first position victory at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières.
